Book Review: Tending Critters in the Ridges by Clyde Brooks

" Each chapter of Tending Critters gives a glimpse of a man who dedicates his life to animals. No matter how big or how small, the word pictures are so vivid that the characters will leap off the page and into readers’ hearts. A cantankerous cat will long be remembered after he leaves the surgical ward and turns his fury on the unsuspecting mice in the barn he rules over. The experiment tried by a man who wanted to see what a mixture of methane gas (his cow) and a match would do is highly amusing. Caution: Do not try at home!"

"I'm enjoying "TendingCritters in the Ridges" immensely!  -- The stories he tells as he goes about his work as a "vet-nary" in beautiful Brevard, are just wonderful. He writes with a sense of humor that has me chuckling out loud, and putting down the book many, many times to wipe tears of laughter! I feel as though I've actually met some of the folks who fill the pages of this book with "local flavor". The entire book just comes to life! It's just the best!"

"I must say, "Tending Critters in the Ridges" would make a simply WONDERFUL gift for anyone's list who loves good writing (it's hard to believe this is his first book), good humor, and, of course, animals. That would pretty much cover everyone! I sure hope he will write s'more books for us!"    Westlake, OH

"I just finished Dr. Brooks' book. All I can say is "More, More!" A great read, which I will recommend to friends."       Flagstaff, AZ

"I really enjoyed your book “Tending Critters in the Ridges”.   It is so nice to picture the people and places you wrote about in the ridges of North Carolina.  No “shoot-em-up” here - just good stories about good hard working people.  I really look forward to your next book." David Hyde, Edmonds, WA

"Your stories are like a winding road that turns from moment to moment, starting out gently funny and then movingly touching. Your recollections were so poignant and real that I felt as if I got to spend the time rather than reading them, actually following you through your day. Thank you for the privilege of getting to experience these people and their beloved charges, through your eyes... and thank you for seeing them with so much kindness and obvious compassion."
 -Jordan M., El Paso, TX

I read Tending Critters in the Ridges while visiting my Mom in Wisconsin and left it there for her to enjoy. When I returned home, I bought three more to give as gifts. I fully intend to purchase more as Christmas presents to my children. Dr. Brooks is a born story teller and obviously a wonderful vet. -Peg Bresnahan

"A delightful book!  Dr. Clyde Brooks has a wonderful gift for telling stories, but Tending Critters in the Ridges is more than a book of stories.  It is a book of gentle wisdom, profound insight and wonderful humor." - Stephen Brown, Professor, Reformed Theological Seminary , Orlando, FL

"Tending Critters in the Ridges" is a real page-turner.  I couldn't stop reading it!  Dr Brooks is such a gifted writer and his insight into the needs of each animal he cares for is remarkable.  Sandy Briggs, Atlanta, GA.

"Tending Critters in the Ridges is warmly reminiscent of James Herriot's book.  The humorous characters and touching true tale make the book hard to put down.  At the end of each chapter, I couldn't wait to read the next episode in the life of this gentle animal doctor." - Dale Pickens, DVM, Mills River, NC

"...you sure did a great number on your book.  I just finished it and really enjoyed every chapter.  Supurb human interest and humor -- it couldn't be better.  Congrats and thanks a bunch!" - Hal Bowles
